Structural       The structural team has decided on an 8 inch thick concrete deck with steel girders for the bridge.  It has been established that each of the two lanes will be 12 feet in width with an additional 2 feet one ach side for the parapets, making the total width of the bridge 28 feet. The load combinations and maximum moments have been investigated in Visual Analysis.

Geotechnical       The geotechnical team has explored the soil boring logs to determine soil properties. The borings have been drafted in AutoCAD to present a stratified profile. A survey and topographic map have been obtained and were used to develop a boring location map.

Preliminary Design Review and Presentation

Structural       The structural team has decided to use 3 girders for support, and each girder will be of the same shape. They are determining distribution factors so that the design moment strength can be calculated.

Geotechnical       The geotechnical team is investigating a sheet pile design to serve as a groundwater cutoff surrounding the retaining wall structure. They are considering computer software options for the design.

11 / 20/ 13

Structural      The structural team worked on determining the section of the steel girders using composite sections analysis.

Geotechnical CWalsht is a computer program that analyzes capacity and depth of embedment of sheet piles.  The program was attempted, but did not operate properly.  New software is expected next semester.  For now, conservative hand calculations will provide results for preliminary design.

Structural   The structural team developed a spreadsheet to evaluate various sections in their moment capacity. They are currently using Visual Analysis to obtain the value of the applied moment.

Geotechnical   The geotechnical team researched temporary bridge rentals and obtained specifications, design loads, and cost estimates. They will proceed with the foundation design of the temporary bridge.

3 / 20/ 14

Structural   The structural team has selected the section to be used for the the three girders.  They have verified that the shear capacity of the their design exceeds the maximum applied shear force that the bridge would incur. They are modeling the girders and deck in Visual Analysis to act as a composite section.

Geotechnical  The geotechnical team has been working to design the bridge retaining walls and wingwalls for both the Temporary Bridge and Delaware Bridge. They have also begun the redesign of the sheet pile support of excavation using the software SWP.

4 / 21/ 14

Structural The structural team has completed the 3D model in Visual Analysis and is improving it to ensure more accurate results.  They will then be comparing the hand calcualtion results from the single girder analysis to the moment values obtained from the 3D model system.

Geotechnical The geotechnical team used AutoCAD to create a three dimensional model of the abutment. They also completed the design of the reinforcement for temporary bridge structure.
